D'atra Hicks had all the essentials needed to make some great albums. Unfortunately, anyone who saw her in the play Mama, I Want to Sing would have been stunned to hear how faceless and generic both her vocals and the songs were on this '89 debut release. The late '80s established producer dominance as a major element on urban contemporary, New Jack, and hip-hop tracks, and that was the case here. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
