Poor weather grounds search for family, including infant, lost in Arctic

By: THE CANADIAN PRESS REPULSE BAY, Nunavut - Bad weather continued Wednesday to ground searchers combing the tundra after a family of seven, including a one-year-old infant, disappeared a week ago during a trip between two remote Arctic communities. Search planes including a Hercules continued to sit on runways in Hall Beach and Repulse Bay on the northwestern tip of Hudson Bay while 14 people searched on snowmobile over the 300-kilometre route between the two tiny communities, said RCMP Staff-Sgt. Harold Trupish. "They're basically following the route that would normally be taken between the two communities," said Trupish. "It seems like it's rolling hills with a flat area along a river basin and small lakes." The family, which includes five children ranging in age from one to 12, left Repulse Bay last Thursday. When they didn't arrive in Hall Beach on Saturday, a search began the next day. Trupish said the weather was mild, in the five-degree range. But the air is full of ice fog, creating poor visibility and increasing the hazard of ice build-up for the planes. "A Twin Otter went up today, but it had to come back down," Trupish said. The search teams included search and rescue crews as well as members of the local Ranger patrols. "Everybody wants to get them found as soon as possible," said Trupish. |
