Sun, 2008-05-11 13:53
By: THE CANADIAN PRESS CORNWALL, Ont. - Edward Gale scored in the first period and Taylor Nelson stopped all 31 shots he faced as the Humboldt (Sask.) Broncos beat the Camrose (Alta.) Kodiaks 1-0 Sunday to win the RBC Cup junior A hockey championship. Gale scored at 16:39 of the first frame while on the power play, walking out of the right corner and tucking the puck behind Camrose goaltender Allen York to give the Broncos a lead they would not relinquish. With their season on the line, both teams turned up the intensity in the third period. Mike Connolly had Camrose's closest scoring chance of the game when he ended up with the puck alone in the slot but was stopped by Nelson. The Kodiaks went on the power play with 59 seconds left in the game when Jordan Shindel was sent off for hooking Camrose star Joe Colbourne. With the net empty in favour of the extra attacker Camrose threw everything at the net, but couldn't beat Nelson, who made a game-saving stop with one second remaining. The best scoring chance of the second period came when Humboldt forward Laurent Benjamin was awarded a penalty shot. After stealing the puck inside the Camrose blue-line, he was pulled down by Camrose forward Jesse Todd. Benjamin fired wide on the scoring attempt. Heading into the final, Humboldt led the five-team tournament with 24 goals in five games. Camrose, the only undefeated team at 5-0-0, had allowed only four goals in five games. |
