Nadeau Rallied Against Developers
While the Columbia Shuswap Regional District Board met inside, a crowd gathered outside as a final show of opposition for two proposed developments on the lake: Westbeach in the North Shuswap and Carmel Cove in the South Shuswap.
There are already 19 buildings on the Carmel Cove property, which is allowed under the zoning of C6/Waterfront Commercial. However, the buildings - in the words of CSRD planner Scott Beeching - appear to be single-family dwellings.
Ray Nadeau was one of those who rallied against this approach of the developer to build them and then apply for rezoning and was happy the CSRD voted to turn down the rezoning request.
"We'd prefer they weren't built at all. But because they're there, it's a better decision we think then to set it up so that every other developer is going to do the same thing."
Although CSRD staff recommended directors vote to accept the rezoning request, Directors Ted Bacigalupo, Denis Delisle, Rene Talbot, and Ron Oszust voted against the recommendation thus turning down the request.
Although Delisle, the North Shuswap Director, voted in favour of the popular request - he said sometimes people don't know what's good for them and he's not sure the South Shuswap residents will be happy with their request in the end.
