Area C/South Shuswap Director Ted Bacigalupo said his vote against staff recommendations on the Carmel Cove zoning wasn't a slight on staff but rather a different perspective....

"What the staff may not fully appreciate or integrate into their decision making or their recommendation process is the sentiments of the public at large." claims Bacigalupo

The developer of Carmel Cove put up 19 buildings on the property, which was perfectly legal as it is allowed under the C6/Waterfront Commercial.

However, when he applied to rezone it residential, the community protested as they felt it was a backdoor approach.

Staff recommended the rezoning request stating it would suit the character of the area better than if the developer put in what is allowed with the current zoning: restaurants, pubs, marina, convenience stores, commercial lodging, craft and gift stores.

North Shuswap Director Denis Delisle voted against staff recommendations in respect of the community wishes, but said he didn't know if it was really the right choice.

Ray Nadeau, one of a crowd who attended the meeting said it was 'one of the best days he's had in a long time.'

The crowd gave the CSRD Board a round of applause for their decision.
